Burghley House, Stamford
Emulsion on canvas 30x48ins
I wanted to paint this Elizabethan palace which I often saw lit by the sun on my walks in the park. In order to capture this illuminated effect, I decided to use gold and silver acrylic paint to highlight the brightly lit parts of the building and provide a sharp contrast with the dark shadows cast by a low sun. An impressionistic treatment was used to simplify this complex building into a design which softened the rather formidable building into a painting that one could tolerate in a living space.
